Private wire and behind‑the‑meter options: alternatives when the grid is constrained

Private wire and behind‑the‑meter (BTM) arrangements move generation and consumption off the public distribution system by supplying a defined set of consumers directly. Private wire typically serves a nearby business park, campus or industrial estate via a dedicated local network; BTM generation offsets on‑site demand and reduces exposure to export pricing and network charges.

The commercial attraction is straightforward: by selling output directly to local customers or to the host site, projects can lock in predictable offtake terms and avoid uncertain export tariffs and queueing delays. However, private networks require land rights, bespoke connection works, and clear contractual frameworks for access, maintenance and allocation of export or import events. Planning, third‑party wayleaves and metering arrangements can be material constraints.

From a regulatory angle, private wire projects interact with licences, connection agreements and sometimes network operator approvals. They can change the revenue profile relative to merchant or PPA routes: revenues may be lower than a high merchant price but more stable. For smaller investors, those trade‑offs affect expected cashflow volatility and counterparty risk (the financial health of the local offtaker).

For retail investors in fractional renewable projects, awareness of these alternative delivery models matters. Platforms and fund structures should disclose whether output is exported, sold via private wire, or used on‑site, and explain the contract counterparties and rights. That transparency helps everyday savers compare projects that look similar on nameplate capacity but differ markedly in revenue certainty and operational complexity.
