Power Purchase Agreements for Small UK Renewable Projects: Structure and Revenue Visibility

A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) is a contract under which a generator sells electricity to a buyer at agreed terms. For small-scale solar, wind and battery projects, PPAs range from short merchant arrangements to multi-year fixed contracts. Contract structures vary: sleeved or corporate PPAs route physical or financial flows through an intermediary, while virtual PPAs (VPPA) settle differences financially without physical delivery. Key commercial terms include contract duration, price formula (fixed, baseload plus collar, or index-linked), volume guarantees and credit support requirements.

Counterparty credit quality is central. A long-term contract with a corporate buyer or aggregator reduces merchant exposure and makes projected revenues more bankable, which is important both for project financing and for valuing the asset within a fund. Indexation to wholesale prices or to specific indices affects inflation linkage; some PPAs include floor/ceiling mechanisms to limit downside or upside volatility. For smaller generators, aggregators and corporate offtake consortia can improve access to larger counterparties and administrative capability.

Operational realities—curtailment clauses, metering accuracy, and balancing responsibility—also influence realised cashflows. Contractual allocation of imbalance risk and treatment of curtailment or constraint payments must be understood when assessing expected returns and downside exposure.

Retail investors considering fractional shares in renewable projects should look at whether portfolio revenues are underpinned by PPAs (and their terms), the credit quality of offtakers, and how merchant exposure is handled. Clear disclosure of PPA terms helps everyday savers understand revenue visibility and residual merchant risk in tokenised holdings.
