How Renewable Certificates (REGOs) Influence Small-Scale Project Revenues

REGOs are certificates issued to generators to demonstrate that a given quantity of electricity has been produced from renewable sources. They are non‑physical, tradable instruments separated from the electricity itself and administered in the UK under the relevant regulatory framework. For generators, REGOs can be sold to suppliers, corporate buyers or other market participants seeking to evidence green electricity usage.

The value of a REGO depends on market demand and the degree to which buyers value origin attributes beyond the underlying energy commodity. For some corporate buyers, REGOs are an affordable way to meet sustainability reporting requirements; for others, higher‑value contracts (such as direct corporate offtakes) may bundle higher premiums. Historically, other schemes (for example, renewable obligation certificates) provided different subsidy profiles; REGOs operate in a simpler, origin‑credential role rather than as a direct subsidy in most cases.

For small projects, REGOs can be an incremental revenue stream or improve marketability of output through green labelling. However, certificate markets are liquidity‑constrained and prices can fluctuate; project contracts must specify whether certificates are retained by the generator or sold as part of bundled offtakes. Retail investors should therefore check whether a fractional investment conveys rights to associated certificates and how certificate sales are treated in revenue figures.

When assessing fractional renewable investments, understanding whether REGOs are included in project cashflows and how platforms will manage certificate registration and sale is a key diligence point for everyday investors.
